Dagmawit Axum Tsion Maryam Tigrayan Orthodox Tewahdo Church was officially established in Charlotte in February 2023 as Tigryan Americans who share Tigray Orthodox Church Christianity, who wanted to worship together, and to bring families as Tigryan community and Christian families living in Charlotte came together and discussed how to establish a place of worship.

This was further discussed in a zoom meeting with representatives of the Tigryan community on how to establish the church, including the renting a place of worship, hiring of a priest, as well as drawing a program on the proceedings of the church service, children's activities and other community services. It was finally agreed to establish a church named Dagmawit Axum Tsion Maryam Tigrayan Orthodox Tewahdo church in Charlotte, North Carolina.

A transitional committee was organized with members from the congregation to process the establishment of the church, with information dissemination to all believers of the denomination to provide the necessary support.
